I Am Done With Newton Mail
I have been a Newton Mail user since 2014 when it was known as CloudMagic and it was free. When CloudMajic moved to a subscription I stayed and even with the constant price hike I stayed.
Then came the two near-death moments when the service was to be discontinued and saved at the last minute. I hated the hunt for the perfect replacement but the positive side is that I got to try dozens of clients.
So when I signed up again last year and paid my $50 yearly subscription I was expecting to be as satisfied like before but that didn’t happen. In a year updates have been scarce and the once refreshing minimalist look is starting to feel dated.
The Mac app seems to be abandoned with constant crashes, bugs on the iOS app will go unfixed for months and emails seem to disappear and appear randomly. I have also become worried about privacy. Like I said a company on the brink of collapse with so much sensitive information on their servers is a scary proposition.
Other more affordable clients offer more features without a yearly subscription or the fear of another shutdown.
So after 7 years of using Newton in one form or another, this was my last. I don’t see the value anymore I have found email clients that fulfill my need and offer a better value.
The two I am currently using are the always popular Spark and the versatile Postbox.
I love the look and functionality of Postbox on my Mac and the privacy it offers. On my phone, I have reverted to Apple Mail since Postbox does not offer a mobile app. And while I find Spark an amazing client on both Mac and iOS I prefer the better privacy of Postbox and Apple Mail.
On the value, side Spark is free and good for the vast majority of users, and for power, users Postbox is the clear winner at just $40 for a lifetime license instead of a yearly subscription.
So farewell Newton I hope you can stay in business and improve and maybe win me over in the future but for now we have to part ways.
