Newton Have Been Saved (again)
This may sound like deja vu since I made a similar post a little over a year ago. But once again my favorite email client has been saved from shut down.
I have been a Newton user since it was free and named Cloudmagic. Over the year the name changed and the prices increased but I didn’t mind. I was happy to give Cloudmagic anywhere from $25-50 a year for the service. Why? Well because until this day I haven’t found another email client that offers what Newton does at a better price. Sure Superhuman it’s nice but is also $360 a year compared to Newton’s $50.
For me and many other email power user Newton is an amazing service and a great value. So last year when Cloudmagic announced it was shutting down and ending the service I when on a crazy rant and in search of a replacement.
I started using every client I could find and unfortunately nothing was working for me. Sure it may just be that Newton engrained on me but nothing else was scratching my itch.
Enter Essential
Luckily smartphone start-up Essential acquired Cloudmagic and the service was saved from its imminent shutdown. So I shelled another $50 for a year worth of service and when my merry way.
Not again
Then just when my subscription was about to renew I got the life-changing email from Essential announcing that the service was once again shutting down and all the drama from a year prior played out once again. I was mad. Well mad will be an understatement I couldn't accept that such good service was been shut down.
The resurrection
So I gave up deleted Newton from all my devices before and decided to find the best alternative. A month in and dozens of tryouts and nothing. The closes I could settle were Spark but the lack of read receipt and the cluttered interface are huge let downs.
But I don’t have to suffer anymore since Newton has been saved by Maitrik Kataria and Justin Mitchell.
And let me tell you they seem as passionate about Newton as the community does and they are committed to having Newton succeed.
We have heard this before right what guarantees we have next year won’t be the same story?
Well along with a new stronger GDPR compliant privacy policy they had also set forward a contingency plan.
Here it is:
Contingency plan to keep Newton going
We don’t want users to go through what we have been through for the last couple of years. That is why we want to build a contingency plan right out of the gate.
This is the worst-case scenario. If all else fails and something happens to us or our business we’d still want Newton to live on and community to takeover.
We promise to open-source Newton and find a way for self-hosted servers to support the product indefinitely so that your contribution is not wasted.
I am just glad I can continue using Newton and that the new owners seem invested into it. That I am willing to continue using the service for as long as possible.
Side Notes
I did notice that the in-app purchase has been removed from the apps and now the sign-up process only happens directly on Newton’s website. While this may be a little inconvenient for some the 15-30% cut that the Apps Stores take may be the reason why. So I don’t mind paying Newton directly. They are even offering a 20% discount for new and returning customers during May 2020.
