Why should Apple Buy Cronometer or MyFitnessPal?

Apple has been focused on health for a while now, and Tim Cook is on record saying he sees Apple's biggest contribution being in the health space.

Why should Apple purchase a food-tracking app? The two best apps in my opinion are MyFitnessPal and Cronometer. MyFitnessPal has been the market leader with the largest user base and Cronometer has been the sleekest and most accurate one. Both apps have free versions, but MFP is very limited and full of intrusive ads, while Cronometer's more in-depth data is also reserved for the premium paid plan. And neither is particularly cheap, MFP charges $20 a month or $80 a year while Cronometer charges $9 a month or $50 a year. The limitation of the free tier and the steep premium prices are a roadblock to wider adoption and better health insight for Apple customers. Apple could either offer the service for free as an added value for its customer or as a sleeker, more affordable service with a higher privacy standard. We have seen this happen before, one example has been Appleā€™s acquisition of Forcast.io, the makers of DarkSky and Forcast.io weather data API.

While there have been zero rumors of Apple looking to enter the food tracking market, it will definitely be a game changer for the industry and Apple user base.

However, it is possible that acquiring MyFitnessPal or Cronometer, two popular fitness tracking apps could potentially be a valuable addition to Apple's portfolio of products and services. Whether or not this would be a good move for Apple ultimately depends on a variety of factors, including the cost of the acquisition, the potential for profitability, and how well the product aligns with Apple's overall business strategy. Another roadblock to an acquisition will be the overzealous regulatory environment in the US, but especially in Europe.
